A YA murder mystery, set in the woods, with a strong female protagonist and her band of high school friends, The Box in the Woods reminded me of one of my favorite YA series, Charlotte Holmes。 Thus, it was unsurprising how much I enjoyed this book! I was left with some serious FOMO (fear of missing out), for not having read books 1-3 of the Truly Devious series, but this read exceptionally well as a standalone, and provided enough history to feel like I wasn’t missing too much of Stevie’s back story。 The Box in the Woods is set in a small town on the east coast, recognizable only for its unsolved murder of four teenagers, found dead at a sleepaway camp after being stabbed and shoved into a box in the woods (hints the name)。 After her previous success in solving decades old murders, Stevie is propositioned to join the new owner of the summer camp in working to solve the infamous murders that still surround the town。 With a less than inviting welcome by the townspeople, Stevie sets off to do what so many others before her were unsuccessful at, finding a murderer。 Author, Maureen Johnson, crafts a haunting tale, brilliantly woven and expertly laid out as Stevie delivers a mesmerizing finale。 With loveably unique characters, you can consider me the newest member of the Truly Devious fan club! *Disclaimer: A review copy was provided by the publisher。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

This was like a perfect episode of Sherlock。 All of the clues to solve the mystery were there, lurking just out of sight, and we got to watch Stevie put it all together in a Holmesian montage。 We've got thrills, romance, and (of course) CRAFTS! Adding in the element of a secluded summer camp with a small town atmosphere made it exponentially creepier (and more addictive!)。 To those who haven't read the first 3 books, you could easily start here as nothing from the previous series is spoiled。 Wil This was like a perfect episode of Sherlock。 All of the clues to solve the mystery were there, lurking just out of sight, and we got to watch Stevie put it all together in a Holmesian montage。 We've got thrills, romance, and (of course) CRAFTS! This book has an Agatha Christie who-dun-it feel to it。 It is kind of unrealistic in terms of a 17-year-old solving a cold case from 1978 all on her own, but I love a strong female protagonist so I’m all for it。 I needed more Nate in this book and much less David。 Janelle is a great, craft-obsessed sidekick。 I also love that there is a nod to the LGBT+ community with Vi identifying as they/them。 Definitely pick this one up when it comes out on June 15th 2021! Can't wait for the next instalment! 。。。more

It was a lot of fun being back with Stevie and friends in a new setting。 Something about this was not as gripping as the original trilogy though。 It felt like we spent most of the time in Stevie’s head instead of interacting with her friends and gathering clues。 The big reveal was very random and anticlimactic。 Stevie was piecing things together in her brain without the reader ever knowing what she was actually thinking, so it just didn’t feel as fun as the original three books where clues were It was a lot of fun being back with Stevie and friends in a new setting。 Something about this was not as gripping as the original trilogy though。 It felt like we spent most of the time in Stevie’s head instead of interacting with her friends and gathering clues。 The big reveal was very random and anticlimactic。 Stevie was piecing things together in her brain without the reader ever knowing what she was actually thinking, so it just didn’t feel as fun as the original three books where clues were given to us along the way。This was okay though!
